About this class:
This is an 8-16 week after school art class for students ages 13+ with a LOVE of drawing. This class is ever growing and changing based on students' needs. Some techniques and theories are repeated every semester but students can take this for multiple semesters and ALWAYS be learning something new.
This class covers many techniques including but not limited to, shading, tone/value, positive/negative space, perspective, proportions and gesture & contour line drawing. While there is a focus on techniques, there is plenty of room for creative expression and the opportunity for the students to flex their creative muscles.
This class is taught by Mrs. Eva Borko. Eva has also studied with Mona Brookes, author of “Drawing with Children”. She is adept at meeting each artist at their current skill level and challenging them to grow. She specializes in working with small people and teenagers.
Why are drawing classes based on age rather than skill level?
A child,as they grow, goes through stages of development in language, communication, literacy, mathematics, physical and emotional development. They also go through 4 distinct stages of art development. Guidelines referring to a child's development can be fluid. A child may be more advanced in one area than another. I have found the average ages for each distinct stage of child art development to be very accurate. It is my deepest desire that your child fall in love with drawing. If your child experiences high-frustration in a drawing class they will likely conclude it is their fault. That something is wrong with them. That they CAN'T draw. When,in reality, they are in a developmentally inappropriate class. The four distinct stages of child art development are Scribbling ages 2-4, Pre-Schematic ages 4-8, Realism ages 9-12, Pseudo-Naturalistic ages 13-15, Crisis of Adolescence ages 14-17.
The teen drawing class, ages 13+ navigates two developmental stages. In these two stages, Pseudo-Naturalistic and Crisis Adolescence , the most important thing is the way their drawing looks. They are concerned with the result. The level of self-criticism is extremely high. They are beginning to realize the amount of time it takes to draw well. They have to practice skills they don't enjoy to reach their goals. They are deciding if this "drawing thing" is worth it. This class is an hour and a half long. This allows time for students to practice focused skills, apply those skills to a project and have time to work creatively. The teen class is full of laughter, music and fun, BUT they work hard.
The teen drawing class is a SAFE space for artistic teens to express themselves. The age guideline is also due to the nature of general class conversations. The teen class covers a variety of topics including art history, current art news and how art relates to our world today. There may also be occasional, brief exposure to mature content while viewing works of art. _____________________________
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions:
Minimum of 4 students per class. Max of 10 students per class. A week before classes begin, if the minimum has not been met we will have to cancel the class. Please sign up in advance to guarantee your spot in the class or to make sure we have the class you want for your artist. Please share with your friends through email and social media!
We are very flexible with families. We understand there may be a child on the cusp of either class. Please email or call with questions.
You may sign your student up for as many 8 week sessions as you like as they will learn and grow their skills with each session and many new projects will be created and not duplicated. We recommend signing up for the full 16 weeks during a semester to get the full benefit of the class. Many students are with us for years of classes!
IF the instructor has to cancel class for emergency reasons (personal or environmental) and we cannot find a replacement teacher, we will contact you as soon as possible through the Remind App. The possible Makeup Class will be held on the 9th week after the scheduled 8 weeks have ended.
If you are having trouble signing up for a class it means there are no spots left for that session. Please choose a different class or session.
